Derek Jeter was named one of the club's best players. he was a baseball player for the Yankees for 20 years. Great players came and went, but No. 2 was a staple in the top third of the lineup, flashing his leathers daily at the shortstop. As of his 1996 AL Rookie of the Year campaign, Jeter has played in at least 148 games and registered at least 179 hits, 10 home runs and 11 stolen bases in 14 of 15 seasons. Without a dislocated shoulder that kept him sidelined for six weeks at the start of the 2003 season, he would have easily reached those points in all 15 years. In other words, he was consistently well above the league average for a decade and a half. As a result, he finished his career in sixth place on the all-time hits list. He never won an MVP, but did finish in the top 10 of the vote eight times. The closest call was in 2006 when Jeter hit .343, finishing just 14 votes behind Justin Morneau for the honor. He was rewarded for his stellar play with 14 All-Star appearances, five Gold Gloves and five Silver Sluggers.
The New York Yankees were founded in 1901 in Baltimore, Maryland. There they played under the name Baltimore Orioles. In early 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery bought the club for the American League and the team moved to Manhattan. Until 1912, the team was known as the New York Highlanders. Because the Highlanders played in the American League, many called the team NY Americans, but the press often used the name Yankees or Yanks to save space. In 1913, the team moved to the stadium where the then New York-playing San Francisco Giants played, and from then on they called themselves New York Yankees. The new stadium in the Bronx opened on April 18, 1923. 70,400 spectators saw the first match in the new stadium, where Babe Ruth hit the first home run. The Yankees have won the World Series, the highest title in American baseball since then, 27 times, with the last win in 2009. This gives the club the most titles of all American clubs that play with the pros in Major League Baseball. In addition, the Yankees have won the American League 40 times and played as many World Series finals. The Eastern Division of the American League has been won 18 times, most recently in 2012. The Yankees first achieved success in the American League in 1921 under manager Miller Huggins. However, in the World Series, they lost to the Giants. Also in 1922 and 1923, the "Bronx Bombers" won the American League. In 1922, they lost again to the Giants in the World Series, but in 1923 they manage to beat the Giants.
